Marketing is dead!!!
Well, not not really. But anyone serious about marketing has to include Internet Marketing as part of their vocabulary. This is true for all forms of "selling" of products or services. So this affects the business-to-business community as much as the business-to-consumer and online entreprenerial communities.
Why should I be interested in Internet Marketing?
Consider just these three trends:
- Broadband uptake
According to Richard Wray of The Guardian in the UK on 14th June 2007, "There are more than 1.1 billion of the world's estimated 6.6 billion people online and almost a third of them are now accessing the internet on high-speed lines. ...298 million people had broadband at the end of March..". Of the broadband subscribers, there are: 60 million in the USA; 56 million in China; 26.5 million in Japan; 16 million in Germany; 14.1 million in France; 14 million in the UK.
- Internet Advertising
An article in Knowledge@Warton published May 30, 2007 entitled "Will the New Online Advertising Models Click?" reports that online advertising was worth $16.9 billion in 2006. So by the end of 2006 Internet Advertising spend had already overtaken radio advertising spend and it is now making inroads into other media.
This surge of interest in Internet Advertising is driven by three main factors: the take-up of Broadband; the lower cost of Internet Advertising compared with other forms of advertising; and what Professor Peter Fader of Wharton calls "accountable advertising". It is much easier to obtain precise data on the success (or failure) of Internet Advertising campaigns - think Click Through Rates - compared with all other forms advertising where nebulus proxy measures are used to indicate success or failure of campaigns.
- Online shopping trends
Internet shopping grew by 54% during 2007 to account for 15p in every £1 of retail spending according to the Times, UK. This trend is replicated in many other developed countries.
